Dear Sand Hall,
I am writing to you in regards to my interest in initiating an art project at the Warrawong Community Centre.
Recently the Coomaditchie Centre began and completed successfully a similar group in the same community.
Planetnickolly is a community arts production company that would be delighted in reproducing a painting program should funding allow and be available to it.
Planetnickolly was originally created by Nicole Dennis (myself) and the late Oliver Swabey in order to assist us in releasing our own negative mental illness symptoms via creative outlets such as writing, drawing, acting, self expression, in fact any ability that was artful and positive as a release for symptoms such as mania, anxiety, psychosis and depression.
Planetnickolly was originally created as a website and chat address.
Oliver and I found each other in a pro-suicide chat room and after discussion with Oliver agreed that this was negative release and that mentally ill people needed a positive chat room/outlet.
We engaged seventy-two people across the globe within 3 weeks of uploading the website.
Unfortunately Oliver was very ill and had attempted suicide not long before our meeting. Planetnickolly allowed Oliver to release as much of this feeling as he could by creating and helping to construct a new planet (so to speak) where release was promoted rather than the negative self harm that he was used to.
This allowed Oliver seven more months of life, after which he surrendered to the symptoms and finally took his life. Since then I have been developing an idea for a group. The main objective of the group will be to allow people who live with an illness to release creatively. And so the name of the project is ‘release via creativity’.
The plan is to have two hours a week where participants can just sit and paint. No theme or prerequisites just a space for them to release. Actual canvases allow participants to take their work home if they wish. I am currently looking into the cost for the canvases and paints and any advice would be appreciated.
Please allow a week for me to research this. The hope is for the group to be a six-week program though should the group ask for longer this could be negotiated with the community centre.
My experience in the creative arts is extensive, particularly regarding arts intervention and therapies. I myself have lived with symptoms of mental illness and have found painting to be a great way to release any negative energy that may be in my system at the time.
I feel the group would also give participants the opportunity to meet and socialise with others in the community, therefore encouraging social cohesion and friendship. Often all that is needed is time out; this also could be the reason for some of the participants joining.
The hope is to encourage at least twelve participants. With such a group no participants have to be there each week. They may come and go in any given week; this will allow any one off participants to join on any given day. Coffee and tea will be available, as will crayons for any parents who need to bring their children.
The group is age open and the only requirement is that the participant is dealing with some negativity due to mental illness. Thankyou, Nicole Dennis. ANY DONATIONS ARE OF COURSE APPRECIATED THE ADDRESS FOR POSTING DONATIONS IS ON THE HOME PAGE ON THIS SITE!

Christmas In July

The 15th of July 2007,

'The View'

hmm..... let me ask most of all of everybody weather or not they can Remember/or Not, the last Christmas they did have..... was it a joyous occasion with many presents, lots of food, Cherished Family members???

Please let me explain in more detail.... most of US......

-Know how much of a marketing ploy Christmas IS, (n there fore NO $$).......

-Know how cherished family are either on the other side of the world/ unable too move/ too 'POOR'(for lack of a better word)/ or there already with god celebrating,(yes actually celebrating the birth of Jesus)/dead)....

-Know that if they were to go and 'BUY' presents that they would probably die of starvation before their presents worth....

SOOO........... ...... ..... ....
PlanetNickOlly decided with the small contribution from the Wollongong City Council, as well as a couple of local business Hence with which Planet was provided 'Lucky Door Prizes'...

And So It Began.....
A Christmas that would be able to be enjoyed, for the simple reason that one there was no media hype to force people into doing stuff the really didn't want to do..

Eventfully SUNDAY...

Begins(after much cooking and organization) with a trip down to the local church to see how many people were able help/volunteer for the days events..
To our surprise was that they were mainly ready with just a few scones to butter and jam, and the bread to remove from the freezer...all brilliant on the church front..

After a couple of hours later with many a bread sliced and now buttered as well. The task was on to migrate all and everything down to the Centre/Hall..
Arrival to the hall was hectic with food to be set out, Pro-Wrestling Ring to be setup, salads, coffee, tables, chairs, ETC all had to be organized/made...

KICK OF AT 3PM

The wrestling match was between the local Parish Priests in which only to be fair ill say that it was a tied match (You will just have to watch the video, lol)...

Food was it seamed to be one of the more popular items(lucky the was a sh*%load of it).

And yes open Mic was meant to be on the agenda not that there was an extreme amount of people jumping up and down to get on stage, which mind you the local talent that is Corey sung and played the afternoon to a finish absolutely beautifully..

From what could of been (only the people involved come).. To what seamed like the whole community showed up with quite easily the number of people greater by far over the 100 mark...

It IS/Was a Christmas to be thankful for.......

if only everyone was physically able to be there.
